JACK BEDER: CITY LIGHTS
From February 25 to April 3, the Leonard & Bina Ellen
Art Gallery presents Jack Beder: City Lights. Jack Beder
(1910-1987) was originally from Opatow, Poland, and immigrated
to Canada
in 1926. He studied art at the École des beaux-arts
de Montréal, and subsequently became an active member
of the city’s burgeoning arts community. This exhibition
of paintings and
drawings pays homage to the artist’s unique contribution
to the artistic milieu of Québec, and focuses on his
urban vision of downtown Montreal in the 1930s and 1940s.
In addition to
Beder’s modernist representations of streets and neighbourhoods,
the work from this show provides a rare glimpse into the
cultural life of the city’s downtown café and
nightclub scenes.
Jack Beder: City Lights is curated by Esther Trépanier,
Professor, Département d’histoire de l’art,
Université du Québec à Montréal,
and Sandra Paikowsky, Professor, Department of Art
History, Concordia University. A 92-page illustrated and
bilingual catalogue accompanies this exhibition, with essays
by the curators and a chronology compiled by François
Dion, Director,
Artexte. The Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery gratefully
acknowledges the generosity of The Fraser Elliott Foundation
for its funding of this publication.
Montréal Jazz + Clubs
This exhibition of rare photographs and memorabilia vividly
recalls Montreal’s golden era of jazz and nightclubs
of the 1930s and 1940s. The show includes original photographs
of Montreal
nightclub interiors, jazz musicians and floorshow entertainers,
as well as publicity materials, menus, and recordings. These
original documents are all from the unique collection of
Montreal
jazz history materials at the Concordia University Archives.
Montréal Jazz + Clubs is curated by Nancy Marrelli,
Director of Archives, Concordia University.
In conjunction with these two exhibitions, the Gallery is
offering curators’ talks, a panel presentation, a film
programme, and a variety of tours. Please refer to our invitation
or our website for
